Comprehensive evaluation of the token
AAVE demonstrates exceptional fundamentals across development, community support, and market position as a category-defining decentralized liquidity protocol. Active development (9.0/10) is evidenced by weekly production releases, ongoing formal verification for its major V4 upgrade, and an expanding RWA footprint exceeding $500M TVL. Community and governance health (8.5/10) remains strong with active forum discourse and over 195,000 tokenholders, despite minor internal debates regarding revenue share between Aave Labs and the DAO (7.5/10). Tokenomics (6.8/10) benefit from a fixed maximum supply of 16M tokens with ~96% circulating, though direct protocol fee distribution to tokenholders remains constrained. The Security and Audit History section scored 4.5/10 due to an unrecovered drawdown exceeding 50% from its 2021 all-time high and historical bad-debt/exploit incidents across its multi-year operational history; however, because these incidents do not meet the criteria for a recent severe or unresolved qualifying red-flag event under overall scoring rules, no mandatory overall cap applies. The final score is the exact weighted average across all six fully evaluated sections.

About Aave (AAVE)
AAVE is the native ERC-20 governance and safety module token for Aave, a decentralized, non-custodial liquidity protocol for lending and borrowing. Originating from the ETHLend project, Aave is deployed on Ethereum and multiple networks including Base, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, and Optimism. The token features a fixed maximum supply of 16,000,000 units, with approximately 96% currently circulating. AAVE is used for voting on protocol parameter changes and risk management through an on-chain DAO, as well as for staking in the protocol's Safety Module.
Developed under the leadership of Aave Labs CEO Stani Kulechov, the protocol enables overcollateralized lending markets and tokenized real-world asset (RWA) pools. Aave's core smart contracts undergo external security reviews, invariant testing, and security contests across protocol releases, including V3 iterations and the V4 architecture. The project also maintains operational frameworks including incident response playbooks, protocol Guardian controls, and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance processes for institutional interfaces.
Over its operational history, Aave has experienced security and bad-debt events totaling approximately $197.7 million in cumulative documented losses. These incidents include an estimated $196 million KelpDAO collateral crisis resulting from an external bridge contract vulnerability, approximately $1.6 million in CRV-related bad debt, an August 2024 exploit of the peripheral Repay Adapter totaling approximately $56,000, and an April 2023 Yearn exploit that routed transactions through deprecated Aave V1 contracts. The AAVE token trades at an unrecovered drawdown of more than 50% from its May 2021 all-time high. Additionally, the protocol has experienced operational friction, including 2026 governance disputes regarding revenue capture between Aave Labs and the DAO, alongside contributor departures.
