Comprehensive evaluation of the token
NIGHT serves as the native utility and governance token for the Midnight Network, a zero-knowledge Layer-1 developed within the Cardano ecosystem by Input Output (IOG) and the Midnight Foundation. On the technical front, active development is robust (8.0/10) with disciplined releases following the March 2026 mainnet launch and versioned protocol upgrades like Midnight Ledger 8.0. However, the project faces notable hurdles across other dimensions. Community support is weak (4.0/10), dominated by mercenary airdrop farming and thaw tracking rather than organic developer engagement. Tokenomics (5.5/10) reflect a fixed 24 billion token supply with a novel dual-token DUST utility mechanism, but face heavy concentration with ~60% held between the Midnight Foundation and Reserve, alongside substantial supply overhang. Governance (5.5/10) remains centralized under the Foundation during its phased rollout. Security is a primary concern (3.5/10) following a July 2026 exploit on the third-party Wanchain bridge corridor draining ~$9–13M worth of NIGHT and driving the token to all-time lows, compounded by the absence of publicly verifiable third-party audit reports. While the core zk-ledger was not breached, the bridge incident and lack of public audits highlight elevated systemic and ecosystem risks.

About Midnight (NIGHT)
Midnight (NIGHT) is the native utility and governance token of the Midnight Network, a privacy-focused Layer-1 blockchain developed by Input Output (IOG) within the Cardano ecosystem. Originally created as a Cardano-native asset in December 2025 and mirrored onto Midnight, the network employs zero-knowledge cryptography and a dual-state ledger designed for commercial and regulatory-compliant data privacy. The token was initially distributed via broad mechanisms including the Glacier Drop, which allocated allocations across more than 170,000 addresses.
The network operates on a dual-token economic model consisting of the unshielded NIGHT token and DUST, a non-transferable, renewable resource generated by NIGHT holdings that is consumed for shielded transaction capacity. NIGHT has a fixed total supply of 24 billion tokens, with issuance managed through a protocol Reserve that emits block production rewards. In addition to generating DUST, NIGHT is utilized for network consensus incentives, protocol governance, and funding the ecosystem Treasury.
While Midnight has deployed initial mainnet milestones and integrated institutional validators, the project faces several early-stage considerations and risks. Real-world application adoption remains unproven, and the token has experienced price volatility. The network's governance remains centralized under the Midnight Foundation while phased decentralization progresses. Furthermore, approximately 30.8% of the total supply remains non-circulating without granular per-cohort vesting schedules published, organic community engagement is relatively low post-airdrop, and formal third-party smart contract audit reports were unavailable in evaluated security data.
